Step 1: Gather Your Supplies
You'll need a sharp knife, a cutting board, and of course, an onion.
Step 2: Prepare the Onion
Trim off the root end of the onion, leaving the stem end intact. This will make it easier to peel.
Step 3: Score the Onion
Using your knife, make a shallow cut lengthwise along the side of the onion, just deep enough to pierce the outer layer.
Step 4: Peel Away the Skin
Gently peel away the outer layer of skin, starting from the scored edge. Repeat this step until all the papery skin is removed.
Step 5: Rinse (Optional)
If desired, rinse the onion under cold water to remove any remaining skin particles.
Step 6: Trim and Use
Trim off the stem end of the onion, then slice, dice, or chop as needed for your recipe.
Step 7: Dispose of the Waste
Dispose of the onion skins and root end in your compost or garbage.
Step 8: Wash Up
Don't forget to wash your hands and clean your cutting board and knife after handling the onion.
